Essential Oils That Treat Vertigo
Vertigo is a dizzy or spinning sensation, or a feeling of being unsteady or lightheaded. Vertigo may occur on its own, or be a symptom of other disorders such as low blood pressure, nervous disorder, ear or eye conditions, or head injuries and concussions. A doctor can determine if it is a symptom of a serious health condition. For occasional, mild vertigo, aromatherapy treatment with essential oils can help decrease sensations.
Peppermint Oil
Peppermint oil is a common treatment for headaches, motion sickness, nausea and vertigo. It helps to improve blood circulation, stimulating oxygen to flow to the brain. Gently massage the forehead and back of neck with two to three drops of peppermint oil. To avoid skin irritation, this oil should be added to a milder carrier oil such as lavender or almond oil.
Cypress Oil
Cypress oil from the cypress tree has a fresh, woody aroma. It helps stimulate blood and oxygen flow to the brain and also opens up the breathing passages, helping to decrease lightheadedness. This oil can be diffused into the air from an aromatherapy diffuser and inhaled.
Basil Oil
Basil is a traditional aromatherapy treatment for vertigo. Basil leaves from the herb plant can be added to boiling water to make a steam inhalation. Basil has a light, spicy and sweet scent, and breathing in the essential oils from these leaves helps to remedy symptoms.
Lavender Oil
Lavender oil is pressed from the petals of the lavender flower and has a sweet, floral fragrance. It is used to treat vertigo, depression and insomnia. It can be used directly on the skin, to scent pillows or clothing, or diffused into the air with an aromatherapy diffuser.
Rose Oil
Rose oil has a characteristic strong, flowery aroma and is used to treat vertigo and depression. An excellent way to experience the benefits of essential oils from flowers such as roses is to add them to bath water to provide steam aromatherapy.
Rosemary Oil
Rosemary is another essential oil from an herbal plant used to treat dizziness, fatigue and depression. Fresh rosemary leaves can be added to a pot of water to make a fresh and sweet smelling steam inhalation. The hot water releases the oil from the leaves and allows them to be carried by the steam.
Tangerine Oil
Tangerine or citrus oil has a fresh, citrusy fragrance and is used to treat migraines, headaches and vertigo. This essential oil is usually pressed from the peel of the tangerine fruit. Adding dried or fresh peel to hot water releases the fragrant oils in steam that can be inhaled.
