    Topiramate and Weight Loss

Topiramate is an anticonvulsant used to treat some types of seizures in individuals with epilepsy and Lennox-Gastaut syndrome. It may also be prescribed to prevent migraines and to manage an alcohol addiction. Unfortunately, weight loss, along with other gastrointestinal problems, is a side effect of the medication.

    Weight Loss

Topiramate has a long list of side effects related to the digestive system, including swelling of the tongue, change in the taste of food, increased saliva production, gum overgrowth, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, gas, diarrhea, heartburn and constipation. More severe side effects include loss of appetite, nausea, stomach pain and vomiting. Not surprisingly, some individuals experience weight loss while taking topiramate.

    Dietary Instructions

Talk to your physician about changing your diet if you find yourself losing weight. You should avoid high-fat, low-carbohydrate diets such as Atkins and the ketogenic diet while taking topiramate, according to the MedlinePlus website.

    Prescribed for Weight Loss

A drug called qsymia is a combination of topiramate and phentermine. Qsymia is sometimes prescribed, along with diet and exercise, to treat obesity and promote weight loss.
