How to Get Rid of Veins in Hands

Veins in the hands typically become more prominent with age, so removing veins that bulge out of the surface of your hands can give you a younger appearance. According to the Schulman Vein and Laser Center, superficial veins that are visible through the skin are not medically necessary because deeper veins can adequately perform the job.

    Step 1

Receive a referral from your doctor to a vein center. Vein and laser centers have physicians on staff that can recommend different therapies to treat unwanted veins. During your initial consultation, the doctor is likely to examine your hands and recommend a treatment option.

    Step 2

Undergo sclerotherapy to remove hand veins. According to the Vein Clinics of America, during this procedure, a sclerosant solution is injected into the veins. You are not given any type of anesthesia while receiving the injections. The sclerosant solution seals off the veins and causes the blood to be redirected to other veins. The sealed-off veins are eventually absorbed into the body.

    Step 3

Follow all after-care instructions. For a couple of hours after the injections, you may be instructed to wear a compression bandage. Normal activities can be typically resumed the next day.

    Tip

A physician will typically leave behind at least one vein to ensure you can receive intravenous medications in the future.

    Warning

Make sure you go over any possible side effects with your doctor before treating hand veins. Possible side effects of sclerotherapy include pain, swelling and redness around the injection site. If the veins in your hand are not causing a medical problem, your insurance company is not likely to pay for any procedures used to remove them.
