How to Get Rid of Bumps on the Head

Head injuries may occur due to a traffic accident, sports injury, assault or household accident. In moderate cases, injuries will only result in mild swelling; the painful bumps can be alleviated at home. If you are not sure about the severity of a head injury, however, consult a physician.

    Step 1

Place an ice pack on the swollen area. Ice causes the constriction of blood vessels, limiting the amount of blood that can fill the bump. The ice should be placed for 20 minutes at a time, with five-minute intervals in between.

    Step 2

Elevate the head. Do not keep the head lower than the body, as this will cause a rush of blood to the head--and the bumps will get bigger.

    Step 3

Observe the injured individual carefully. You have to check a person's alertness to make sure the injury is not severe and possibly life-threatening. Ask the individual questions, and make sure he is walking normally.

    Tip

Acetaminophen should be used for minor headaches.

    Warning

In cases of speech problems, balance problems, nausea or severe headaches, seek medical attention immediately. Do not take ibuprofen, aspirin or other anti-inflammatories, because they may increase bleeding.
