How to Get Rid of Frizzy Hair in Humid Weather

Anyone who lives in a humid climate can tell you that a rise in humidity often means a rise in the amount of frizz in their hair. This phenomenon happens when humidity spikes causing keratin proteins in the hair shaft to bond in often flamboyant ways, creating that coiled, frizzy effect most people spend hours trying to get rid of. Fortunately conditioning and styling treatments help keep frizzy hair moisturized and styled so that humid weather doesn't mean damaged, distressed or frazzled tresses.

    Heat-Free Frizz Control

    Step 1

Wash your hair with a moisturizing, smoothing keratin shampoo. After rinsing the shampoo out apply a palmful of a thick, smoothing conditioner throughout your hair from the nape of the neck all the way down to the ends. Leave this conditioner treatment in place for at least five minutes and up to ten to get the most hydration possible. Hydrated hair has less of a tendency to frizz out. Rinse out the conditioner using warm water rather than scalding hot to avoid drying out the hair or the skin.

    Step 2

Dry your hair with a towel and allow the strands to dry without using a blow dryer. Heat can often cause long-term damage to the hair shaft so if you are looking to help your hair out in humid weather throughout the year, avoid heat styling when possible.

    Step 3

Apply a pea-sized amount of smoothing serum to your damp hair using your fingers. Concentrate a bit more of the product on any areas prone to fly-aways as well as on the ends of the hair shafts, where dryness can occur. Many of these smoothing serums help to lock out humidity throughout the day.

    Step 4

Add a bit of styling mousse to the hair while it is still damp if you have very curly or wavy hair. This product will help retain the curls and tamp down on the frizz factor. For those with very pronounced curls, twist each curl around your finger to create a smooth finish while the hair is still damp and right after adding the mousse. Avoid applying more product than necessary.

    Heat Styled Frizz Control

    Step 1

Wash and dry your hair using the moisturizing, smoothing treatment as usual. Allow the hair to dry until it is just slightly damp.

    Step 2

Apply a heat protectant to your entire head of hair from root to tip. Choose a protectant that encourages extra shine and a smooth finish. Many of these products will also help to lock out moisture from the air.

    Step 3

Blow dry your hair working in one to two-inch sections. Place a round brush under a section of hair at the root. Turn the blow dryer on and point the heat down over the section of hair. Pull the round brush through the hair following over top with the blow dryer until you reach the ends. Keep tension in the brush as you move. Repeat this process working with one to two-inch sections until your hair is completely dry.

    Step 4

Turn on your flat iron to a medium to medium-high setting. Run the flat iron over one to two-inch sections of hair to smooth out the hair shafts and encourage that smooth high shine finish. Move from the root of the hair to the tip taking care not to leave the iron in one place for more than about a second or so as you work your way around your head.

    Step 5

Apply a pea-sized amount of smoothing serum to the hair and run your fingers through the strands to finish off the look and to help seal out moisture for the day.

    Things You'll Need

    • Smoothing shampoo with keratin

    • Hydrating conditioner

    • Hydrating smoothing serum

    • Medium-hold mousse

    • Smoothing heat protectant

    • Blow dryer

    • Round brush

    • Flat iron

    Tip

Only wash hair every other day to avoid drying out hair. Natural oils in the hair actually help keep a handle on frizz.

Avoid heat styling whenever possible and work with your natural hair texture. If you have curly hair, encouraging that natural shape will actually work to discourage fly-away frizz in the long term.

Apply a moisturizing hair mask to hair every other week using ingredients like avocado, egg, and olive oil to help hair recover from styling.
