How to Use Hydrogen Peroxide on Acne Skin

Acne -- blemishes, zits or pimples -- are unwanted infections of the skin that can strike individuals of any age or sex. Acne is more common in teenagers and in women who are pregnant, on their menstrual cycle, or starting or stopping birth control pills. One treatment method includes the use of hydrogen peroxide, a common over-the-counter antiseptic that can help to dry out acne by killing bacteria on the skin.

    Step 1

Clean your face using mild soap and water or a gentle facial scrub to remove oil, dirt and makeup from your skin. Pat dry with a towel.

    Step 2

Soak a cotton ball in hydrogen peroxide and apply it either to the acne breakouts on your face. You also may opt to apply hydrogen peroxide to your entire face to help prevent future breakouts.

    Step 3

Allow the hydrogen peroxide to do its job -- wait until the bubbling stops in approximately a minute or two.

    Step 4

    Rinse your face with water.

    Step 5

Apply an oil-free moisturizer to prevent skin from drying out.

    Things You'll Need

    • Cotton balls

    • Hydrogen peroxide

    • Mild soap

    • Gentle facial cleanser

    • Oil free moisturizer

    Tip

Using only mild soap. Hydrogen peroxide can cause irritation and skin dryness, which may be compounded by harsh cleansers.

    Warning

Keep hydrogen peroxide away from your eyes to prevent burning. Use caution around your hair and eyebrows -- hydrogen peroxide can bleach hair. Stop using hydrogen peroxide if your skin becomes dry, irritated or painful.
