How to Use MetroGel for Acne

Acne occurs when the oil glands become blocked with excess bacteria and oil. This is typically the result of hormone fluctuations, heredity and certain medicines. The prescription medication MetroGel can be used to treat skin conditions, such as acne. MetroGel contains the antibiotic metronidazole. It comes in a water-based topical gel or lotion format that can be easily added to a daily skin care routine. According to MetroGel.com, patients who used this medication for 10 consecutive weeks noticed a 71 percent improvement in pimples.

    Step 1

Wash the acne-affected skin with a gentle cleanser.

    Step 2

Wait approximately 20 minutes before applying the MetroGel.

    Step 3

Spread a pea sized amount of MetroGel onto acne-prone areas, rubbing it into the skin. Apply once a day.

    Step 4

Wait five minutes for MetroGel to dry, then apply cosmetics as usual.

    Step 5

Continue using MetroGel as long as your doctor recommends. It may take up to three weeks before you see an improvement.

    Things You'll Need

    • Gentle cleanser

    • Oil-free, noncomedogenic moisturizer

    Tip

MetroGel.com recommends avoiding washing acne-prone skin with hot water. In addition, refrain from cleaning affected areas with harsh scrubs and astringents. Doing so while using MetroGel can result in further irritation of the skin. Although this medication may cause a dry film to develop on the skin's surface, its water-based formula helps to trap moisture inside the skin. However, use a gentle moisturizer if you develop dry skin after application. To avoid clogged pores, be sure all cosmetics and skin products are perfume-free, oil-free and noncomedogenic.

    Warning

The U.S. National Library of Medicine warns that MetroGel will increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun. Avoid prolonged sunlight exposure and wear sunscreen and protective clothing when outside. MetroGel may cause side effects such as skin irritation, redness, burning, stinging or dryness. Consult a doctor if these symptoms do not subside or become severe. She may suggest discontinuing or using this medication with less frequency. Do not discontinue medication without consulting your doctor. Acne may get worse. Apply MetroGel carefully, keeping it away from your nose, eyes and mouth.
