How to Use a Crock-Pot to Keep Tortillas Warm

The secret to tender, pliable corn or flour tortillas, says The Kitchn recipe editor Emma Christensen, is to gently heat the tortillas, then keep them warm with moist heat. This can be a challenge if you're serving a crowd for a dinner party or buffet. Use a slow cooker to keep tortillas that you've already heated in the oven, the microwave or with a skillet warm soft and supple. Different brands of slow cookers have varying temperature settings. Check the manufacturer's instructions or contact the company's customer service department for cooking and heating advice for your specific slow cooker.

    Step 1

Dampen a clean dishcloth or towel with water from the tap or a spray bottle. Wring out as much excess water as possible.

    Step 2

Place the stack of preheated tortillas in the center of the dishcloth. Wrap the edges of the cloth tightly around the tortillas.

    Step 3

Put the wrapped tortillas in a slow cooker. Adjust the heat setting to low.

    Step 4

Check the tortillas frequently, replacing the towel with a freshly dampened cloth, if needed.

    Things You'll Need

    • Clean dishcloth or towel

    • Spray bottle, optional

    Tip

If your slow cooker has a warm or buffet setting, use that instead of the low setting for gentler heat.

    Warning

Do not wet the dishcloth wrapping the tortillas too much: The result may be soggy tortillas.
