How to Use a Neti Pot During Pregnancy

A Neti pot is a tool used for sinus irrigation. This technique is one of the oldest and most researched forms of treating sinus issues such as infections, allergies and headaches, according to Jalanetipot.com. This type of treatment is of particular interest for pregnant women because the medication used in the Neti pot will not affect the fetus. Neti pots can be purchased over the counter at pharmacies. If you have questions or concerns regarding their use or forms of appropriate treatments for sinus infections, allergies or headaches while pregnant or otherwise, speak with your doctor.

    Neti Pot Use

    Step 1

Add an approved saline cleansing solution to the Neti pot. Neti pot saline solutions can be purchased premade at a drug store or pharmacy, or made at home by disolving 1/8 teaspoon of salt to 8 oz. of purified water. There are no necessary changes in a Neti pot solution for pregnant women, as this solution does not enter the blood stream. Make sure the solution is warm, but not scalding hot. Fill the Neti pot completely to achieve the desired pressure flow for cleansing purposes.

    Step 2

Place your head over a sink or stand outside where the solution can drain from your nose without creating a mess.

    Step 3

Tilt your head to one side so that one nostril is directly over the other. This alignment is key in making sure the saline solution stays within the appropriate nasal passages to do its job.

    Step 4

Place the pour spout of the Neti pot in the nostril that is on top of the other. Begin pouring the solution into the nostril while breathing through the mouth only. Empty the pot in this manner.

    Step 5

Gently blow your nose into a tissue to excrete any excess solution left in the nasal passages and to also rid your nose of loosened mucus.

    Step 6

Repeat steps 1 through 5 utilizing the other nostril.
