How Many Calories Are in Miso Soup?

Miso soup is typically very low in calories, making it an excellent choice if you're watching your weight. In its most basic form of just miso paste and water, a 1-cup serving of miso soup contains just 35 calories. But the soup often has added tofu and vegetables -- and may contain fatty sesame oil -- all of which add to the calorie count. One chunky version from Epicurious contains 123 calories per serving, which is still low enough to fit into a reduced-calorie diet.

To control your weight, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends eating broth-based soups like miso as well as other high-volume, low-calorie foods such as fresh vegetables. The CDC also reports that eating broth-based soup or a salad before meals will help you consume fewer calories overall. This works because the water and fiber fill your stomach, causing you to feel full after eating less of your main course than usual.
