What Can I Use to Lubricate My Elliptical?

When you choose to have a home elliptical machine instead of using one exclusively at the gym, you need to provide maintenance to keep it in proper working order. Maintenance can require tightening loose parts and cleaning the wheels and tracks. It's also very important to keep the moving parts lubricated with the right substance.

    Stick With the Manufacturer

Your elliptical machine should come with lubricant when you purchase it. This will be lubricant that the manufacturer has approved for the specific model of elliptical machine. When you run out, check with the manufacturer to see if you can order more directly. Your elliptical machine manual should also tell you the type of lubricant that is recommended for your specific model.

    Typical Elliptical Lubricants

Many elliptical machines use red-lithium ball-bearing grease or white-lithium grease. You can find these types of grease from an automotive store, the elliptical manufacturer or a fitness equipment store. Nonetheless, check your specific machine's manual or contact the manufacturer to determine the best type of lubricant for your model.

    Stay Away From Home Options

You might be tempted to use household greases, oils or other lubricants on your elliptical machine, but this might harm your machine. Some types of grease can destroy plastic in the elliptical machine. In addition, oil takes away the grease currently on the elliptical parts, which can prevent it from moving properly and potentially cause damage.

    Lubrication Schedule

You won't need to purchase a lubricant very often because you only need to perform the lubrication once a year or possibly more if you use the machine constantly. Gym Tech suggests cleaning it twice a year. Check your warranty to see if lubricating the machine yourself might void it; instead, you might need a service technician to perform the lubrication.
